Over half a million people changed communities in 2024. Many crossed paths without knowing it.
Every year, thousands of people leave one city and thousands arrive, and many want exactly the life of the other.
In 2024, 546,536 people changed autonomous community in Spain. This is according to the INE's Migration and Residence Change Statistics, published in December 2025 with final data.
Behind that figure are half a million decisions. People returning home, people going to try their luck, people who finally dare. And there's something the total number doesn't show: many of these people crossed paths on the way, because mobility doesn't go in one direction only.
We tend to imagine that people 'leave' a place. But when we look at the data by communities, what appears is a constant coming and going. The Community of Madrid is the best example. According to the INE, in 2024, around 13,000 more people left for other communities than arrived from them. It's the most negative internal balance in Spain. Yet, that balance is only the difference: in each direction, more than 100,000 people moved. For every person from Madrid who packed their bags, almost another one arrived to take their place in the city.
The same happens at the other extreme. The Valencian Community was the community that gained the most neighbours from other regions, with a positive balance of 10,966 people. Winning doesn't mean no one leaves, it means that, in the coming and going, more arrived than left.
The most repeated corridors. Some paths are travelled much more than others. In our publications, we've told two of the most heavily trafficked:
• Madrid ↔ Andalusia: 14,056 movements from Madrid to Andalusia in a single year. • Madrid ↔ Valencian Community: 20,716 movements between the two communities.
Surveys point in the same direction. According to the 'Planeta Propietario' barometer by Grupo Mutua Propietarios, Andalusia is the preferred destination for Madrileños, followed by Asturias and the Valencian Community. And the company itself summarises what weighs in on these decisions: the climate, the environment, proximity to family and, also, professional opportunities.
What they lack is not a vacancy, it's meeting each other. Think about that Madrid ↔ Valencia corridor. Among those more than 20,000 people, there's almost certainly an account manager in Valencia who wants to live in Madrid. And an account manager in Madrid who wants to return to Valencia. Both have a compatible profile, have been thinking about it for months, and both hesitate for the same reason; leaving seems like starting from scratch. They'll never meet by chance. They don't meet on the AVE, they don't follow the same accounts, they don't search on the same job portal. Each one is looking for a vacancy, when what they need is to meet. That's why Caribou Swap Jobs exists: so they can connect and make the journey easier.
Which side are you on? You may be one of those who want to leave their city or one of those who want to arrive in another. In both cases, the data says the same thing: you're not the only one, and there's someone doing the opposite journey.
